What is Customer Risk Assessment?

Customer Risk Assessment

Customer Risk Assessment is a process used by businesses to identify, assess and manage potential risks posed by their customers. This process involves collecting data from customer interactions, analyzing customer behavior and trends, and evaluating customer financial health. By understanding customer risk, businesses can better assess customer creditworthiness and prevent fraud.

Additionally, customer risk assessment can help businesses identify opportunities to increase customer loyalty and improve customer service. This process is extremely crucial for businesses because, with a proper assessment, you can estimate the potential risk for your customer without starting a relationship that can harm your organization in different ways.

Risk Determining Factors

In a general way, according to global regulations, there are several risk factors that we must consider while we evaluate a new relationship. We can state these risk factors:

  • Customer & Entity: Analysing the customer, its business processes.Requires constant monitoring
  • Manner of Interaction: The way of how the customer delivers his products and services.
  • Product & Services: Identify the transactions concerning products and services
  • Transactions: Analysing all transactions according to specific criteria.
  • Geographical Locations: Country of the residence of customer

Customer Risk Levels

After analyzing the risk factors according to certain metrics, you need to interpret your relationship. While we are segmenting a relation, there are 4 basic risk levels:

  • Prohibited: Any kind of agreement should not be made.
  • High: Requires Customer Due Diligence
  • Medium: Possible Risk Carrier
  • Low: Easily identified organization

Customer Risk Assessment is one of the most important steps of the Anti Money Laundering compliance program. Deciding on any kind of agreement with a company can have multiple aspects to consider and these aspects can vary depending on several factors. Performing these controls can be a pain in the neck. But there are several tools to simplify these processes. Do not ignore making a proper Customer Risk Assessment depending on the regulations and laws that you must obey.

What are Customer Risk Factors?

  1. High-Risk Customers: Customers who are considered to be “high risk” for money laundering include those who have a history of financial fraud, are politically exposed persons, or are associated with a country or region known for money laundering or terrorist financing activities.
  2. Large Transactions: Large, frequent or complex transactions can indicate money laundering activity. This includes large cash deposits, multiple wire transfers, or multiple payments to the same beneficiary.
  3. Suspicious Activity: Any suspicious activity should be reported and investigated as it could be a sign of money laundering. Examples include unexplained wealth, unexplained source of funds, or a customer who is not forthcoming about the purpose of a transaction.
  4. Unusual Patterns: Unusual patterns of transactions, such as purchases of expensive items without corresponding income, could be a sign of money laundering.
  5. Geographical Risk: Customers from countries or regions with higher risk of money laundering should be subject to additional scrutiny, including enhanced due diligence.
  6. Poor Documentation: Poor documentation, or lack of documentation, of customer information or transactions can be an indication of money laundering.
  7. Structured Transactions: Structuring transactions is a common money laundering technique.

In addition to that, you should always keep this in mind: Customer Risk Assessment is not a one-time process. You should monitor constantly or frequently the potential risk factors. Because these risk factors can change rapidly and without a continuous Customer Risk Assessment, your company might be in grave danger.
